Update: 26 flee detention centre
 |
| Security breach: Campsfield House |
A MAJOR police operation is under way in Kidlington after 26 people escaped from the Campsfield House detention centre.
GEO, who run the centre off Langford Lane, Kidlington, on behalf of the Border and Immigration Agency, contacted Thames Valley Police shortly before 11pm last night after a fire was started and the detainees escaped.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said this afternoon: "A police operation to locate 14 detainees who escaped from the Campsfield immigration detention centre is continuing today.
"The men were part of a group of 26 who broke out of the centre shortly before 11pm yesterday after an incident in which a fire was started in part of the building."
Supt Robin Rickard, commanding the police response, said: "Having located 12 of the escaped detainees, we are working with the Borders and Immigration Agency and GEO, who run the centre on their behalf, to establish the identities of those who are still missing and get them back into custody as soon as possible.
"We have a substantial number of resources dedicated to the task and are doing all we can to locate the detainees as quickly as possible.
"I urge members of the public to contact us immediately should they see anyone they believe could be one of those involved."

Well, thats solved the problem of over crowding. The rest have nothing to moan about and when they catch the others SEND THEM STRAIGHT BACK HOME.

Andy, I dare you to come into Campsfield with me and see if people in there have nothing to moan about. They're fleeing war, persecution and poverty. Half your ancestors left the UK for Canada, Australia etc because of poverty. Should they have been locked up in places like Campsfield House, and had people telling them to go home?

I have just been to the carboot at the Kassam Stadium thas where the missing people are. Think I counted four english speaking people. Oh and Carole I am more than willing to come to Campsfield on Sea holiday camp with you. Compare the conditions they have with British people living below the poverty line and then see who is worse off.

Martin, if you can't afford the 3 "good" meals a day that these lucky gravy train chaps in Campsfield have escaped persecution for, maybe you should chuck the broadband - an extra quid a day goes a long way, as I'm sure the detainees would agree - if they were allowed to work their "nuts off" for a basic wage in the first place.

Kevin .. perhaps it is his fault then that he was kidnapped at the age of 12 and his family killed then held and abused and tortured by his perpurtators until he escaped and also if the home office had not lost his file in 2001 this would have been resolved , i cant comment on other people as i dont know their situations or how they came to be here i can only comment on my own experience , some people make comments such as yours about the kids i look after that are in care through no fault of their own .

After a sleepless night with the police helicopter making repeated passes over my house, and sirens screeching by searching for the 26, I do wonder if police resources could have been in better use elsewhere. Having seen the manpower utilised on numerous occasions after cases of ABH, GBH and muggings in East Oxford, it must have been a field day for any perpetrators last night.
In addition, I personally know of two EU citizens that were kept in Campsfield, one italian and one spaniard (they returned to the UK from Brazil) in a case of Home Office bungles. They did not consider it a cushy camp in any way.

You would be the first person to complain about your 'valuable' taxes going to waste if they weren't there. Stop complaining and be at least satisfied there are people willing to stay up all night looking for these people! There you are complaining about being in a nice comfortable bed!!!!

I must be missing something. These people are not criminals! They have escaped from perhaps terrible conditions in their own countries. And, ok, they may get 3 square meals a day, which may be more than some people, but they do not have their freedom like the rest of us do. I'd rather have the freedom, personally.
Christine, I hope your partner's situation gets resolved soon - it must be awful for you, and countless others in similar situations.

If the situation were reversed would you care to list the countries that would welcome Brits with open arms.

having worked at the place myself i can tell you now the people in there are not just in there for over staying and are far from being angels most of them go there from prisons for acts such as drug dealing, rape, murder and sex acts on children so if you want these sort of people living next to you good luck.also if the staff were adults and not kids and were not spending all the time trying to slepp with each other then all these problems could ahve been stopped.

Quite right Mary, I also worked there and am sure you will agree, there were/are some decent detainees in there. However we both know we had our fair share of innocent rapists, murderers, fraudsters, druggies etc. Of course the wooly hat brigade will always deny this. What we do need to find out is how many of theses poor persecuted angels are actually a threat to the general public !!! Maybe it was my imagination by I remember reading the notes of some of my darlings and asking myself why are they here and not in prison or at very least STRAIGHT OUT OF PRISON AND ONTO PLANE FOR DEPORT.Still I'm sure the liberal wooly hats will open their home and kids to them !!!

So Pete & Mary, if Campsfield contains rapists, muderers, child molesters etc then why aren't the police advising that the escapees are dangerous criminals whom the general public should not approach? Is it because only the decent detainees escaped or is it because neither of you actually worked there at all?

The police should be allowed to shoot on sight. That would stop any more from escaping.

If things are so bad in there, where have they escaped to. Living rough, with no money or food is better? What will happen now they will mug some old lady or rob some shop , if the do gooders are so worried about them, offer them a room in your house! Doh, don;t think that will happen, any offers?

Kevin, the police [italic]are[/italic] allowed to shoot on sight, or did I misinterpret the De Menezes incident? No charges brought against anyone involved after the poor guy got [bold]seven[/bold] bullets [bold]in the face[/bold] at [bold]point-blank range[/bold] with [bold]no warning[/bold] purely because he looked dodgy. That's racial profiling at work for you - makes you glad to be (white) British.
Keith, if you pay attention to the news, you'll see that most countries not torn apart by war have to devote a large amount of time and resources trying to deal with the issues raised by immigration - it ain't just the glorious land of opportunity we happen to live in. We need to come up with something better than either "send them back" or "keep them locked up". Sticking those with an ethnic background different to a national ideal that never existed in sealed-off camps has a precedent - Hitler called it the Final Solution.

If De Menezes had gone home when his Visa had expired instead of disappearing, working illegally and being an illegal immigrant he wouldn't have got shot. Good riddance I say. All these spongers passed through free countries to reach England. Why? Because they see it as a soft option where they can claim benefits, free health care, free education and breed like rabbits all while being supported by the state. I am sick of being a stranger in my own country.

And by the way, I have no problem with people settling in this country provided that they a) have entered the country legally, b) have enough money to set themselves up properly and c) have a job to support themselves. You wouldn't get into America, Canada or Australia unless you could support yourself, so why try it on here?

SUSAN, I CAN ASSURE YOU I AM AN EX EMPLOYEE AT CAMPSFIELD HOUSE, THE REASON DETAILS OF THE DETAINEES CRIMINAL PASTS ARE NOT BEING RELEASED IS DUE TO A THING CALLED THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT:
SINCE GEO TOOK OVER THE SECURITY IN CAMPSFIELD IS A JOKE, ITS A CASE OF KIDS LOOKING AFTER CRIMINALS, TO GET A JOB AS AN OFFICER NOW ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TURN UP TO THE INTERVIEW. ALL THE OLDER MORE EXPERIENCED STAFF WHO HAD SOME BALLS AND TOOK NO **** HAVE BEEN FORCED OUT AND REPLACED WITH MOORONS. DONT GET ME WRONG SOME DETAINEES I HAVE MET WERE VERY NICE BUT THERE ARE ALSO DETAINEES STRAIGHT FROM PRISON FOR SERIOUS OFFENCES.
SUSAN GO AND GET A JOB THERE AND PUT UP WITH THE ABUSE THEN COME BACK AND TELL ME YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT GOES ON IN THERE THAN ME. THIS DEBATE WILL SURELY CONTINUE ASLONG AS THERE ARE SUCKERS OUT THERE LIKE YOU WHO HAVE GOT THERE HEADS UP THERE OWN ARSES AND ARE BLIND TO WHAT REALLY GOES ON.

Firstly, I can't see the reason why the UK accept people if they have have to lock them up in horrible camps. I didn't even know these camps existed outside Croydon. Sounds inhuman.
Being foreign myself, although I'm not here for political reasons, I'm starting to wish that the UK enforced stronger borders as it's clearly getting out of hands.
Secondly, I can't believe how some of you people write. One wihout any puncuation and one in CAPS.

It has just been announced that all those that are still free ARE CONVICTED CRIMINALS. So now all you do gooders who says they are ill treated ect, NOW SUPPORT THEM!! Invite them into your homes, give them food and board. Proves the point, no one is in Campsfield house unless they should be. Catch them and send them home straight away.

This is absolutely outrageous. How could TWENTY-SIX men escape? Two or three in the confusion, maybe, but 26? Those responsible for camp security should be sacked immediately. They can't even say who the escapees are or what they look like, so if the cops find one, how will they know? More importantly, how will I know if confronted by a strange man at my door? What a debacle! I will lay odds no one will ever be held responsible.
"Lessons have been learned". blah blah. God help us.

I HARDLY THINK PUNCUATION AND GRAMMER IS THE ISSUE HERE DO YOU?? IF IT WAS YOU OBVIOUSLY DID NOT READ YOURS BEFORE SENDING IT!
MOST OF THE DETAINEES HAVE ENTERED THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY OR THERE VISA HAS EXPIRED, MOST ARE CAUGHT AFTER COMMITING A CRIMINAL OFFENCE IN THIS COUNTRY AND TIME SERVED AT CAMPSFIELD IS USUALLY AFTER TIME SERVED IN PRISON (NOT ALL BUT MOST)
I AM DEFINATELY NOT RACIST AS MY HUSBAND IS BLACK.
JUST THINK THAT THE PLACE SHOULD BE RUN BETTER AND STAFFED WITH MORE EXPERIENCED OFFICERS!

Just some clarification for people unfamiliar with immigration law.
The reason that these people were being held there was that they were awaiting deportation. That is to say that the government are working to put in place arrangements to send them back to their countries of origin. This may sound simple but in fact involves sorting out travel documents for the individual (often destroyed or lost), getting the original country to agree to take them back (not always easy), and arranging flights that are willing to take them. Some airlines will not.
Another complication is the obligations placed upon us by international law, meaning that asylum claims must be considered to ensure that we comply with these duties - but if people are in Campsfield, they will usually already have been refused asylum, (rightly in many cases but wrongly in others). These obligations may seem inconvenient to some, but they underpin the protection of human rights for everyone.
People just need to stop and think - nothing is as simple as it seems.

While I take back my earlier comment on these people not being criminals (ok, so the ones who escaped were), I still maintain that a number of people there are innocent of all but needing to escape their own countries or wanting to settle down with a partner and children who they love. Yes, I know the government is trying to do a job, but it will always, always fail if they treat them as statistics and 'cases' rather than people. Call me a 'do-gooder' if you will (in fact, please do - I take it as a compliment), but all I is that, while the system may work for many, it is failing many too.

Convicted criminals [italic]who have all served their sentences[/italic]. I'm sure there are plenty of people in Oxfordshire who are convicted criminals who have served their sentences. Is it proposed to lock them all up again too? I agree that it is a mistake, though, to mix men who are just out of prison with others who are detained for no criminal offence. Given the likely bitterness and frustration in both groups, that's only asking for trouble.

Mary just because your husband is 'black' doesn't mean your not racist!
Harry - grow up and get a grip! you need to get out a bit more!!

If you could post your surname I would very much like to contact you in person about your experiences at Campsfield.

Andy, yes I do read what I write. Just because some (maybe even most) are convicted criminals, doesn't mean they all are. If you read the previous articles and responses carefully, you will notice that they are not there because they are convicted criminals (that's what prison is for, no?), that is merely how some have been discovered. No, it's not right to try and get round the immigration laws and no, I probably wouldn't want a convicted criminal sleeping on my sofa, but there are people in there who just want to live in a country where they're not in fear for their lives and where they can live with their families. You and I are guilty of that too. I know the laws need to be there, but just try considering that these are people who have emotions and deserve to be treated with respect (yes, even the convicted criminals) who we're talking about. As for me being wrong, so what? My opinion stays the same. I'm sure you've been wrong about something in the last two days but we can still believe what you say and take your opninion seriously.

Jason, if you are a journalist, why don't you leave your work number for Mary to contact you on? Journalists usually make their contact details widely known so anyone can easily contact them with a story...
Asking Mary to tell you her surname sounds very dodgy to me... how would you knowing her surname help you to contact her anyway?(you can't guarantee that she is in the phonebook, or there may be more than 1 person with her surname in the phonebook).
Sounds to me like you want to just want to know who her husband is....

Andy - I am replying to you purely to reassure Mary that I am not "dodgy".
My agency has means of getting in contact with Mary should she wish to speak to us, but the process would be simplified if she supplied a surname.

Sarah and other posters who seem to think that indigenous Britons should expect to share these islands with anyone who wants to settle here, regardless of their character or culture, should perhaps lay their cards on the table and tell us whether there should ever be an upper limit to the numbers of immigrants admitted. We are already well into uncharted territory, with historically unprecedented numbers of settlers. And whereas in the past immigrants arrived in a trickle, and a local trickle at that, with most immigrants being from nearby countries with judeao-christian cultural backgrounds, today's settlers are often from distant lands. In the case of Muslim immigration, this increasingly means that Britons are having to make room for large numbers of people from the developing world who wish to bring their extended families with them through arranged marriage and 'chain-migration', and who often seem to be implacably hostile to our history, traditions and culture. The sheer weight of numbers, plus the impact of the left-wing cults of multiculturalism and political correctness, means that there's less and less pressure on such people to integrate. Without a serious attempt to send undesirable settlers away, we only invite more of them to head for our shores. Places like Campsfield need to be run fairly, and inmates need to be treated with consideration. But they should be bundled out of our country as soon as all the disgracefully indulgent appeals procedures have been exhausted. If this is just a race issue for you - in other words, you're simply squeamish about ever deporting anyone with a darker skin than your own, well, fair enough. But you should be honest enough to admit that your outlook is emotionally rooted, and leave the decision-making to professionals who are more responsible in their attitudes than you are. Future generations will not thank you for your vanity, egocentricity, and stupidity. This isn't about you and your silly guilt-tripping and holier-than-thou posturing. It's about massive demographic and cultural change and the slim chance we have of applying any sort of quality control over the enormous numbers of people who demand the right to settle here.

jason, i do not believe for one second you are a journalist, i think you are more likely to be somebody connected to campsfield probably an officer trying to find out which ex employee i am!
I do agree that convicted criminals should not be mixed with genuine asylum seekers and over stayers, like i have already said not all are bad, i did get to meet some nice people in there!
I think there should be a review of the officers who are in charge of the security at campsfield, obviously something is not working.

To the person who said that since they're all "criminals" it was unlikely any "do-gooder" would offer them a place to stay -
If I was living in Oxford now I'd be more than happy to offer a room to any of those who broke out of Campsfield. None of the escapees are murderers or rapists. Many have been convicted of the "crime" of entering without legal papers - hardly surprising given that carrying papers puts you at extra risk when trying to escape many countries where torture is rife. The worst crime any of the escapees has committed is burglary. Of course I don't condone burglary, but if anyone is likely to be reduced to stealing to survive, it's the person who is refused permission to work and only paid two thirds of the minimum white british unemployed people are thought to be able to live on. (That's the case for all asylum seekers - stories about free council housing and mobile phones are all rubbish, I'm afraid.)
Of course, if I was living in Oxford, aware of where some of the escapees are and offering them somewhere to stay, I wouldn't be stupid enough to post a traceable message to that effect on a public noticeboard. But since I'm no longer in Oxford, I'm quite happy to post this.

Its terrible they have escaped, as if there isnt enough running round, hardly any of them run away from war, they just come here for the council flat and benifits our 'brilliant' government keep on giving them. Never mind about old people who have lived here their hole life, paid their way and are having to live off a tiny amount, struggling day-by-day whilst all the money that should be going toward them and other projects such as hospitals, schools, safety, global warming ect is being spent on ILLEGAL IMIGRATES who dont get sent back, cause violance in our streets and taking whatis rightfully ours, and should go off to poland or wherever and live there if you care about them that much. People who believe otherwise, to be honest, makes me sick and are total do-gooders.

Also, think for a second how difficult it could be to get travel documents when you're escaping oppression. The government have arrested your husband/wife/father and they've disappeared. Rumour is abounding they're coming for you next. What do you do??
I know, you ask for a passport then apply for a job in one of the forementioned countries. You get your passport and are offered a job. Then you buy your tickets and leave. Sound feasible?
How about, instead, the government (or local war lord) sends round a bunch of thugs to your home, you escape out the back door with a small bag of things and all your money, you find the local man who knows, he puts you in touch with someone who sends you to someone else who says I can get you out of the country for a small sum of money which will no doubt be all the money you have. You are then taken, perhaps in the back of a truck, perhaps with forged papers, to an airport, shipping port, lorry park, and bundled on to a plane (with fake papers) or into a truck (if there's no papers) and taken somewhere, anywhere. Then you arrive not knowing where you are but grateful your life is not at risk anymore. Nine times out of ten this place will be the nearest safe country.
That's the reality of many of those with fake travel details. And I would imagine that most people in war-torn parts of the world do not have a clue what benefits they can claim in the UK not do I think that would make much of a difference when they're coming for you.
