Our park a no-go area after muggings
People living near an Oxford park have demanded more bobbies on the beat after a series of violent robberies.
Several teenagers have been beaten and mugged at knifepoint in a string of attacks in Gillians Park and the surrounding roads.
People in Greater Leys said the robberies - combined with drug dealers and mini-moto louts - have made the park a no-go area after dark.
David Troth, 45, from Deer Walk, said: "With everything that has gone on people are getting worried. They won't go to the park, even to cut through to the bus stop.
"The last thing you want to hear about is young people being beaten up and threatened with knives. I want the police to put a stop to the gangs hanging around and to patrol more at night."
Robberies on nine people have been reported to the police in just over a month, but officers are not linking them to one gang.
And, in another incident two weeks ago - which was not reported to the police - two 18-year-old German foreign language students were beaten up by a gang of seven youths in Grenoble Road.
Hannah Gibson, who lives on nearby Sandfordbrake Farm, said her husband chased off the attackers after hearing screams.
Mrs Gibson, said: "They took everything off the boys. They even took their shoes. They hit them and kicked them and all sorts. They put up a bit of a fight, but they didn't stand a chance.
"It's disgusting. They were going home the next morning. What a nice reminder of England."
Dc Claire Routledge said many of the robbery victims were foreign language students and advised them not to use the park at night.
She said: "I would like to reassure residents that we are doing all we can to catch the offenders.
"Since the robberies took place we have been increasing the number of high-visibility patrols in Gillians Park.
"These are particularly in the evenings and overnight, which could be why some residents may not have seen them."
Dc Routledge said the police dog section and a helicopter had also been used to monitor the park.
Officers had also been stopping and searching people in the area, including one teenager who was found to be in possession of a screwdriver, she said.
But residents said the area continues to be a haven for drug dealers and teenagers who ride motorcross bikes dangerously close to two children's play areas.
IWCA councillor Stuart Craft arranged a demonstration five years ago where muggers were "symbolically evicted" from the park.
He said: "The police need to be stepping up their patrols.
"There's no point having lovely green spaces if you can't use them."

Never mind at least the park is clean because thats all the PCSO's and street wardens can do, pick up the litter report the damage. What a waste of money. If real police were employed then things might be different.

East Oxford is a no-go area full stop. Entering a park there at night is just asking for trouble

Right... so the park is dangerous becuase the police, parents and the community are doing nothing to remove the cause of the danger. What next? Someone gets run over by a speeding driver so people are 'advised to avoid the road'? Someone gets food poisoning so people are 'advised to avoid eating'. The problem won't just go away if you ignore it. Something needs to be done - perhaps some or all of: discipline, curfew, high-profile policing, CCTV, locking the gates of the park, arresting and punishing the offenders, better lighting, confiscation of mini-motos, etc.

Instead of sending troops to countries which haven't even touched us with a stick ie. Afghanistan/Iraq, we should deploy our troops in such estates to cleanse them of these yobs that truly harm Britain.Martial law should do the trick. Who needs 'foreigners' to ruin a country when we have our own 'working' class doing a much better job!?
The idea of an Islamic state doesn't seem too bad sometimes...

I absolutely agree with Becky's comments, this needs to be addressed and dealt with, for everyone's safety and well being.

Oh can't we all just have a 'big lads' joke about backticklers, the way we healthy fellows often do, grab someone for a friendly wrestle and then slap each others thighs like jolly good chums?

Let's police the street ourselves - the prisons are full so we shouldn't get sent there (if we do, apparently, although the company is a bit rough the facilities aren't too bad at all); if we all stick together in a large group and say ".. just stretching the legs .. didn't see anything but left my bifocals at home .." there'll be a lack of evidence and we'll all get off and with or ".. young thug beaten you say officer, how awful! I'll certainly let you know if I hear anything .." will show we're decent people.
Anyone up for it?

He said' Blah, blah, blah I dont know why you are talking to me because there is no election at the moment and the only time I actually speak to anyone is when I want their votes'.
Councillors, Police, PCSO's are a waste of space. Vigilante may have an idea though !!

Thanks for pointing that out Peter, hadn't noticed it before. What on earth is a symbolic eviction? If something symbolises somthing it is respresentative of it - Y/N?
So they had a demonstration representing the eviction of muggers. Will the IWCA be doing any open-air theatre or street mime to symbolise their pointless existence?

I couldn't resist commenting, I'd say half of Oxford is a no go after dark these days. I feel far safer walking the streets of Manchester or London after dark than my own area. We need to demolish greater leys and blackbird leys and start again. May i also point your attention to the story of Oxfords youngest ASBO?? one stipulation is he isn't allowed alcohol or controlled drugs in his possession. would've thought thats pretty standard for all 14 year olds. why don't we just hang him before he becomes the next 21 year old drug dealer convicted of mugging Germans in parks to feed a crack habit whilst living off everybody elses taxes?
